A trio of Pakistani students brought home bronze medals from the prestigious 54th International Physics Olympiad (IPhO), held in Isfahan, Iran. Talha Ashraf from Karachi’s Nixor College, Huzaifa Altamash from Lahore Grammar School, and Mohammad Salman Tarar from Islamabad’s The Science School were honored for their exceptional abilities in physics. Mohammad Saad Bilal from Rawalpindi’s Siddeeq Public School & College garnered an honorable mention.
The young scientists’ success is a testament to the rigorous training they received at the Pakistan Institute of Engineering and Applied Science (PIEAS) under the guidance of Dr. Mohammad Irfan and Prof. Dr. Amanur Rehman. Their participation was made possible through the STEM Careers Programme, a joint venture between the Higher Education Commission (HEC) and PIEAS.
This year’s achievement marks a significant milestone for Pakistan, with the entire team securing medals or recognition. The feat highlights the country’s growing stature in the field of physics and the effectiveness of its talent development programs.
The foundation for this success lies in the National Science Talent Contest (NSTC), an annual event organized by PIEAS to identify and nurture young scientific minds. The contest, which encompasses physics, chemistry, biology, and mathematics, has been instrumental in shaping Pakistan’s future scientists.
Through the STEM Careers Programme, top NSTC performers undergo intensive training at designated institutes, preparing them to excel at international competitions. This year’s medalists are a prime example of the program’s effectiveness in producing world-class talent.
