Chairman Higher Education Commission (HEC) Dr Niaz Ahmad Akhtar has inaugurated a Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) Lab at the National University of Technology (NUTECH), providing students and researchers with centralized access to high performance computing resources and specialized software. The facility is intended to support practical learning, research, innovation and collaboration, while contributing to the use of technology-enabled education and advanced computing within the university. The inauguration took place during the HEC chairman’s visit to NUTECH, where he also reviewed the university’s academic, research, entrepreneurship, skills development and innovation facilities.
The newly inaugurated VDI Lab is designed to provide students and researchers with centralized access to computing resources that can be used for academic and research activities. Through Virtual Desktop Infrastructure, users can access computing environments and specialized software without requiring each individual workstation to independently maintain the same level of hardware and software resources. The facility is expected to support practical learning by giving students access to computing capabilities relevant to their academic programmes, while researchers can use the infrastructure for activities requiring greater computing resources. The lab will also provide opportunities for collaboration by creating a shared technology environment for students and researchers. The initiative forms part of NUTECH’s wider efforts to expand its technology related facilities and provide students with access to infrastructure supporting advanced computing, digital learning and research activities.
Representatives from Huawei Pakistan attended the inauguration, highlighting the role of industry participation in supporting technology focused education and the development of technical capabilities. Zong also supported the initiative as an industry partner. The participation of both companies reflects the involvement of industry in initiatives focused on academic technology infrastructure and the development of skills relevant to the technology sector. During his visit, Dr Niaz Ahmad Akhtar also explored several NUTECH facilities and received briefings on the university’s ongoing initiatives. These included the National Expansion of Incubation Centers (NEIC), National Incubation Center (NIC), Office of Student Affairs (OSA), National Skills Development Directorate (NSDD) and Mechanical Labs. The visit provided an opportunity for the HEC chairman to review activities across academic education, research, entrepreneurship, skills development and innovation at the university.
Dr Niaz Ahmad Akhtar appreciated NUTECH’s efforts in advancing technological excellence, quality education, research and innovation. He also acknowledged the university’s focus on preparing students for future professional and technological requirements through academic programmes, practical facilities and skills development initiatives. The inauguration of the VDI Lab adds another technology focused facility to NUTECH’s existing infrastructure and is expected to provide students and researchers with centralized computing resources for their academic and research work. The involvement of Huawei Pakistan and Zong as industry partners also highlights the importance of collaboration between universities and technology companies in developing technical capabilities. The initiative combines university based learning and research with access to specialized computing infrastructure, while NUTECH’s other facilities and ongoing programmes continue to cover entrepreneurship, innovation, skills development and academic activities. HEC’s engagement with the university comes as higher education institutions continue to incorporate digital technologies and advanced computing resources into teaching, research and student development.
