Google has introduced a special edition of its Fitbit Air fitness tracker featuring a Pokémon Sleep theme, giving Pokémon fans a new way to combine sleep tracking with the Pokémon Sleep mobile game. The Fitbit Air Special Edition Pokémon Sleep is designed to work with the Pokémon Sleep application, allowing users to turn their recorded sleep activity into progress and rewards within the game. The new wearable is being released as Pokémon celebrates its 30th anniversary, although its higher price compared with the standard Fitbit Air means users are primarily paying for the special edition design rather than exclusive functionality.
The special edition Fitbit Air retains the screenless and lightweight design of the standard model, which was developed with overnight comfort in mind. The tracker can be worn while sleeping to record sleep stages and duration, while Google Health uses the collected information to provide users with insights and guidance about their sleep patterns. The Pokémon Sleep integration allows this information to be transferred into the game, where a user’s overnight sleep and daytime naps can contribute to in-game rewards. On Android devices, the information can be synchronized through Health Connect, while iPhone users can use Apple Health to transfer the relevant sleep data. Once the Fitbit Air is connected to Pokémon Sleep, the recorded sleep information is automatically synchronized to support the game’s sleep-based experience.
The biggest difference between this model and the regular Fitbit Air is its Pokémon themed appearance. The special edition comes in a Sleepy Blue colourway and includes a custom silk printed illustration of a sleeping Pikachu on the band. Google has designed the strap to retain the comfortable and adjustable characteristics of the standard Fitbit Air, allowing it to be worn for extended periods without adding a screen or bulky smartwatch design to the wrist. The device is intended for users aged 13 and above. Google has also confirmed that the special edition is being offered as a limited availability product, with the initial launch restricted to the United States and Japan. Preorders opened on August 27, while shipments are scheduled to begin on September 15.
The Fitbit Air Special Edition Pokémon Sleep is priced at $129.99, making it $30 more expensive than the standard Fitbit Air, which costs $99.99. The higher price does not appear to provide owners with exclusive access to Pokémon Sleep functionality because existing Fitbit Air devices, as well as compatible Pixel Watch models and other supported wearables, can also work with the Pokémon Sleep application. Users can therefore access the core Pokémon Sleep experience without purchasing the special edition tracker. The main additional benefit for buyers is the Pokémon themed band and its limited edition design, which may appeal particularly to collectors and fans of the franchise. Pokémon Sleep itself uses sleep data as part of its gameplay, allowing users to collect Pokémon and progress through the virtual experience based on their sleeping activity. With the Fitbit Air edition, Google is combining its existing sleep tracking hardware with the game’s reward system while giving fans a dedicated Pikachu themed wearable.
