Pakistan marked a major step in advanced technology development with the successful hosting of its first Quantum Computing Hackathon, held from February 6 to 8, 2026, at the National Centre for Physics in Islamabad. The three day event was jointly organized by Pakistan Institute of Engineering and Applied Sciences and National Institute of Lasers and Optronics, drawing significant interest from across the country. More than 950 applications were received from students, researchers, and young professionals eager to explore quantum computing, highlighting growing national enthusiasm for next generation technologies. After a rigorous screening process, 42 finalist teams were selected to participate in the final round, where they worked collaboratively across seven specialized working groups to design practical solutions using quantum computing principles and tools.
The hackathon focused on applying quantum concepts to real world challenges rather than theoretical experimentation alone. Finalist teams engaged in intensive problem solving sessions, mentorship interactions, and hands on development aimed at showcasing how quantum algorithms and models can be used to address national and global issues. The collaborative structure encouraged interdisciplinary thinking, combining physics, computer science, data analysis, and applied research. Organizers noted that the strong participation reflected both the rising awareness of quantum technologies in Pakistan and the readiness of young talent to engage with complex scientific domains when provided with the right platform and guidance.
The closing ceremony was attended by senior leadership from Pakistan’s scientific community. Chairman PAEC Dr. Raja Ali Raza Anwar graced the occasion as chief guest and highlighted the broader significance of the event in his address. He said the hackathon aligns with a long term vision to strengthen Pakistan’s emerging quantum ecosystem by empowering youth to learn, collaborate, and contribute to future focused technologies. He emphasized that developing indigenous expertise in quantum computing is essential for scientific progress and technological sovereignty. International and local experts also participated as invited speakers and judges, including Mr. Martin Gastal from the Open Quantum Institute at CERN and Dr. Shabnam Jabeen from the University of Maryland, USA. Both speakers underlined the global momentum behind quantum research and stressed the importance of early talent development and international collaboration in this rapidly evolving field.
At the conclusion of the event, prizes and certificates were distributed by the chief guest along with Member Science Dr. Shakeel Abbas Rofi, DG NILOP Dr. Manzoor Ikram, and DG NCP Dr. Qaisar Ahsan. The first prize of Rs. 800,000 was awarded to a team that developed a quantum algorithm aimed at the early detection of tuberculosis in the lungs, demonstrating the potential of quantum approaches in healthcare diagnostics. The second prize of Rs. 600,000 went to a team that designed a quantum enhanced flood response system, addressing climate related challenges through advanced computational modeling. The third prize of Rs. 400,000 was awarded for a project that used variational quantum circuits to optimize sensor placement and network design for early warning systems targeting cloudbursts and flash floods.
The successful execution of Pakistan’s first Quantum Computing Hackathon reflects a growing institutional focus on frontier technologies and applied research. By combining academic leadership, international expertise, and youth driven innovation, the event has set a foundation for future initiatives in quantum science and advanced computing.
