Heart Aerospace has successfully completed the maiden flight of its X1 demonstrator in New York, marking a significant development in the expansion of battery electric aviation. The Swedish aviation startup’s aircraft completed its first test flight at Plattsburgh International Airport on August 12, becoming the largest battery powered, all electric aircraft to successfully take to the skies. The piloted flight lasted 27 minutes and reached an altitude of approximately 1,100 feet. The X1 operated entirely using its battery electric propulsion system during the test, demonstrating the ability of a larger aircraft to perform a full flight sequence using electric power.

The X1 has a wingspan of 106 feet and measures 76 feet from its nose to its tail, with a takeoff weight exceeding 25,000 pounds. Its electric propulsion system generated more than one megawatt of power during the flight. The test was conducted under the Federal Aviation Administration’s experimental special airworthiness certification framework and included several stages designed to assess the aircraft’s performance. These included taxiing on the ground, takeoff, climbing, maneuvering and landing. The flight was carried out with a pilot onboard and no passengers, as the aircraft remains a technology demonstrator rather than a commercial passenger aircraft at this stage.

One of the notable aspects of the flight was the amount of electricity used during the demonstration. Heart Aerospace said the 27 minute flight consumed approximately five dollars worth of electricity. While the figure does not represent the full operating cost of a commercial aircraft, it demonstrates the relatively low direct energy cost associated with battery electric propulsion during the test. The flight also provides engineers with important data on the aircraft’s aerodynamics, electric propulsion system and overall performance. Testing an aircraft at this scale is particularly significant because battery energy density remains one of the major challenges facing the development of fully electric commercial aviation.

The X1 is being used as a full scale demonstrator for Heart Aerospace’s planned ES-30 regional aircraft, which is designed to carry up to 30 passengers. Unlike the X1, the ES-30 is planned as a hybrid electric aircraft, combining electric propulsion with additional power generation capabilities to support longer commercial routes. Heart Aerospace has indicated that the ES-30 could enter service around 2031, subject to continued development, testing and regulatory certification. The company has also attracted interest from major aviation companies, including United Airlines, Air Canada and JSX. The successful X1 flight gives Heart Aerospace additional flight data as it continues development of the ES-30 and works toward bringing electric propulsion technology into regional commercial aviation.
