EKKO, a groundbreaking therapeutic device designed to treat neurological disorders such as Autism and Cerebral Palsy, has emerged as the global winner in the prestigious “Better World Project” competition, organized by the Association of University Technology Managers (AUTM). The event, which took place in Washington, DC, USA, saw over 40 projects from across the globe competing, with EKKO standing out as one of the three finalists. This recognition highlights the exceptional innovation and impact of the device, which has been developed by Prof Dr Muhammad Usman Akram and his team at the NUST College of Electrical & Mechanical Engineering.

EKKO is not just another medical device; it represents a significant leap in the treatment of neurological disorders. What sets this therapeutic device apart is its non-invasive nature, making it a safer alternative to traditional methods. The device utilizes vibrational waves to influence neural activity in both the brain and body, offering a holistic approach to treatment. One of the key advantages of EKKO is its affordability, making it accessible to a broader population, particularly in regions where expensive treatments are out of reach. The success of this device lies not only in its scientific innovation but also in its practicality, as it brings tangible relief to those suffering from conditions like cerebral palsy and autism.

Dr Rizwan Riaz, Pro-Rector of the Research and Innovation Campus (RIC) at NUST, expressed his pride and joy at the success of the project, calling it a historic moment for Pakistan. The “Better World Project” competition is unique in that it exclusively showcases research projects that have been rigorously tested in the field and successfully commercialized. Such a feat is rare in Pakistan’s academic landscape, making this achievement even more significant. EKKO’s triumph at the global stage demonstrates not only the capabilities of Pakistani researchers but also the growing prominence of Pakistani innovation in the global scientific community.

The journey of EKKO reflects the hard work and dedication of the NUST team, who have worked tirelessly to bring this device from the research phase to real-world applications. The development of EKKO also underscores the importance of collaboration between academic institutions and the private sector, as the successful commercialization of the device highlights the potential for research to make a tangible difference in people’s lives. The recognition of EKKO as a global winner brings attention to the advancements being made in Pakistan’s scientific and technological landscape, serving as an inspiration to future generations of innovators.
