Google will support Pakistan’s Federal Board of Revenue in exploring the use of artificial intelligence as part of the government’s ongoing effort to modernize the tax authority. The cooperation is included in a Memorandum of Understanding signed between the Government of Pakistan and Google in the presence of Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif, marking a formal step toward integrating AI tools into one of the country’s most closely watched public institutions.
Under the prime minister’s FBR transformation plan, Google will support the tax authority in exploring the use of AI to improve public service delivery, streamline internal operations and accelerate digitalization. The initiative is aimed at making FBR’s processes more efficient through greater use of modern digital technologies, though the agreement does not specify individual AI systems or applications that will be deployed at the FBR, nor does it provide a timeline for implementation, leaving the specific scope of the collaboration to be determined as the partnership progresses.
The cooperation forms part of the government’s wider effort to modernize governance through technology, with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif saying the partnership with Google would support Pakistan’s digital transformation, particularly in government services. The MoU was signed by Ministry of IT and Telecommunication Secretary Zarrar Hasham Khan and David Weller, Google’s Head of South East Asia and South Asia Public Policy, formalizing the tech giant’s involvement in one of Pakistan’s broader digital governance initiatives.
The partnership adds to a growing list of collaborations between Google and Pakistani government institutions, coming shortly after other recent efforts to expand digital literacy, online safety tools and AI adoption across public and private sector platforms in the country. For FBR specifically, an organization that has faced longstanding calls for improved efficiency and transparency in tax collection and enforcement, the involvement of a major global technology company signals a continued push toward using AI driven tools to support the authority’s broader modernization and digitalization agenda.
