The Pakistani government intends to set aside 700MHz channels for the deployment of 5G there. This is probably caused by the 700MHz band, also known as n28, which has better coverage and efficiency.

The following low, mid, and high bands will be used by the Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunication for the rollout of 5G.

Low

  • 700MHz
  • 2.3GHz
  • 2.6GHz
  • 3.5GHz

Mid

  • Millimeter wavebands
  • C-Band (3.6-4.2) GHz

High

  • Unlicensed Backhaul Frequency bands (P2P & P2MP)

The Ministry has also created a “Framework for Frequency Spectrum Re-Farming” in order to manage the spectrum dynamically and make it accessible for all new applications. Although specifics are unknown, the Framework will also be used for digital broadcasting and broadband wireless access.

Repurposing spectrum bands for new, more effective technologies or services is known as spectrum refarming. For instance, a telecom service provider may release portion of the spectrum for LTE services if it is already operating a 900MHz band for 2G services.

The conditions to redefine any specific frequency band will be recommended to the pertinent authorities by PTA, PEMRA, and FAB. The organisations and the current user may talk about spectrum reframing.

Not Coming Any Time Soon

A “Framework for Frequency Spectrum Re-Farming” has also been developed by the Ministry to manage the spectrum dynamically and make it available for all new uses. The Framework will also be utilised for broadband wireless access and digital broadcasting, however specifics are uncertain.

Spectrum refarming is the process of reusing existing spectrum bands for brand-new, more efficient products or services. For instance, if a telecom service provider is already using the 900MHz band for 2G services, it may release a portion of the spectrum for LTE services.

PTA, PEMRA, and FAB shall advise the relevant authorities on the requirements to redefine any particular frequency range. Spectrum reframing may be discussed between the organisations and the present user.
