ISLAMABAD: The federal government of Pakistan has established a multi-agency task force to combat illegal call centers and online fraud operations throughout the country, according to a written reply submitted to the Senate by Minister for Interior and Narcotics Control Syed Mohsin Raza Naqvi.
The task force brings together representatives from key institutions, including the Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP), Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA), and Pakistan Software Export Board (PSEB). Its main mandate is to enhance coordination, develop a real-time information-sharing mechanism among relevant agencies, and enforce compliance against unlawful digital and telecom operations.
Minister Naqvi explained that the creation of this task force aims to strengthen enforcement against illegal digital and telecom activities, improve regulatory compliance, and raise awareness among stakeholders about best practices and legal obligations.
Authorities have already identified 54 illegal call centers and software houses operating across Pakistan, involving 268 Pakistani nationals and 269 foreign nationals. Of these, 213 Pakistanis and 269 foreigners have been arrested, and a total of 63 FIRs have been registered.
The government’s crackdown has also led to significant financial recoveries. So far, Rs. 62.27 million has been retrieved from illegal call centers. The total recoveries from January 1, 2025, to date stand at approximately Rs. 1,405.47 million, highlighting the continued action by law enforcement agencies, including the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA), against online fraud networks.
The formation of this task force reflects Pakistan’s commitment to curbing cybercrime and ensuring that digital and telecom platforms are used legally and responsibly. Officials emphasized that coordinated efforts among multiple agencies are essential to dismantle sophisticated fraud operations, protect consumers, and maintain the integrity of the country’s digital economy.
As online fraud schemes become increasingly complex, the task force is expected to provide a structured and proactive response, combining regulatory oversight, enforcement action, and public awareness initiatives. Authorities have urged the public and businesses to report suspicious call centers and online activities to help strengthen Pakistan’s fight against digital crime.
This initiative signals a renewed focus by the federal government to safeguard Pakistan’s digital landscape and protect both local and international stakeholders from the growing threat of online scams.
