The inaugural Ultimate Robot Knock out Legend (URKL) tournament brought humanoid robot combat into the spotlight this week as two AI powered robots competed in an MMA style match in Shenzhen. The event, described as a robot version of professional mixed martial arts competition, attracted significant public attention after one of the competing robots lost its head sensory module during the contest but continued operating and eventually secured victory. Held at the Nanshan Cultural and Sports Centre, the competition showcased the latest developments in humanoid robotics, artificial intelligence, motion control, and autonomous decision making while drawing interest from technology enthusiasts and martial arts fans alike.
The opening contest featured two identical T800 humanoid robots developed by Engine AI competing inside a specially designed hexagonal arena. The robots, standing approximately 1.73 metres tall and weighing around 75 kilograms, represented the Bullfighter and White Eagle teams. During the match, the White Eagle robot executed a tornado kick that detached the head sensory module of its opponent. Despite the damage, the Bullfighter robot continued operating through its core torso system and onboard algorithms, eventually completing a comeback to win the match with a final score of 3 to 2. The event was attended by martial arts actor Donnie Yen Ji dan, who praised the precision and power demonstrated by the humanoid robots. He remarked that while robot combat had previously only been seen in science fiction films, witnessing the technology in person offered a very different experience.
The competition attracted participation from leading academic and research institutions around the world. More than 200 teams from over a dozen countries and cities initially registered for the tournament, with 32 teams ultimately qualifying for the inaugural URKL season. Participants included teams representing institutions such as Tsinghua University, Stanford University, University of Hong Kong, and Zhejiang University. According to the organizers, the robots are equipped with 29 high performance joints that enable them to perform straight punches, sweeping kicks, side kicks, dodging movements, and other complex actions within milliseconds. By opening software and robot interfaces to participating teams, the tournament serves as a platform for engineers to test and improve artificial intelligence algorithms, balance systems, computer vision, and real time decision making under dynamic conditions.
Organizers stated that the URKL competition will continue throughout the year using a format that includes open qualifiers, double round robin matches, and double elimination rounds before the championship concludes with a grand final expected to take place in Dubai later this year or in early next year. The winning team will receive a pure gold championship belt weighing 10 kilograms and valued at up to 10 million yuan. Engine AI co founder Yao Qiyuan said that every improvement developed during the competition can become a reusable asset for the wider robotics industry by supporting future research and technological development. He added that URKL aims to bring together engineering talent from around the world to explore new possibilities for humanoid robots while advancing artificial intelligence, robotics, and intelligent control systems through practical competition.
