The Punjab government has approved the development of a state owned cloud infrastructure system worth Rs7.4 billion, aimed at strengthening artificial intelligence capabilities and digital governance across the province. The Punjab Information Technology Board has begun preparing the PC-1 document for the project, which is intended to establish a modern government cloud system built specifically to support AI driven initiatives across public sector operations.
As part of the plan, the provincial government will seek technical assistance from a global technology company to help develop a GPU based cloud infrastructure capable of handling large scale computing workloads. The new system is designed to provide a secure environment for government data while supporting large scale artificial intelligence projects and big data operations that require significant processing capacity. Once operational, the cloud infrastructure is expected to serve as the backbone for e-governance initiatives, artificial intelligence applications, and other data intensive government functions, reducing the province’s need to rely on external cloud service providers for these operations.
The Punjab Chief Minister has granted in principle approval for the initiative, allowing the Punjab Information Technology Board to move forward with the technical planning and documentation process required before implementation can begin. Officials at the board described the project as a significant step toward reducing the province’s dependence on foreign cloud platforms while building indigenous digital infrastructure that can be maintained and expanded under provincial control. This shift toward domestically hosted cloud capacity reflects a broader pattern among government departments in Pakistan seeking greater control over sensitive data and computing resources rather than depending entirely on international cloud providers.
Officials also noted that an AI equipped cloud system has become an increasingly necessary requirement for Punjab as the province works to expand its digital governance framework and integrate emerging technologies into public sector operations more broadly. As government departments across Pakistan continue exploring artificial intelligence applications for service delivery and administrative functions, the availability of dedicated local cloud infrastructure is expected to play an important role in supporting these initiatives without adding pressure on existing shared computing resources used across different government systems.
