Pakistan Railways has initiated a comprehensive digital upgrade of its network under Phase-I of the Railway Advanced Infrastructure Network RAIN Project, with completion expected by June 2026. During a recent meeting chaired by Railways Minister Hanif Abbasi, officials from the Directorate of IT presented the progress and implementation plan for this ambitious project. The initiative reflects a focused effort to modernize Pakistan Railways’ operational capabilities, improve passenger experience, and integrate advanced technologies across its network.
Phase-I of RAIN is designed to be fully executed using Pakistan Railways’ own revenue, demonstrating a commitment to self-sustaining infrastructure development. A key feature of this phase is the installation of GPS tracking systems for all trains and locomotives, which will enhance operational safety and enable real-time monitoring of rail movements. This step aims to improve the efficiency of train scheduling, reduce delays, and strengthen the overall reliability of the rail network. Officials highlighted that the GPS tracking system will play a crucial role in managing logistics and passenger information services more effectively.
Another significant component of Phase-I is the establishment of smart and safe railway stations in major cities, modeled on Rawalpindi station. These upgraded stations are designed to offer enhanced passenger services, better security measures, and improved accessibility. Modern amenities will include digital ticketing, real-time information displays, and optimized crowd management systems. The focus on station modernization reflects Pakistan Railways’ objective to elevate the travel experience for commuters and align station infrastructure with contemporary standards.
In addition to station upgrades, selected stations will be provided with high-speed internet access, creating an interconnected digital environment for passengers and operational staff. This measure supports Pakistan Railways’ broader goal of integrating digital solutions into everyday rail operations and promoting a connected ecosystem for passengers, freight management, and administrative purposes. The rollout of high-speed internet will also facilitate the adoption of advanced digital services, including mobile applications for ticketing, navigation, and passenger feedback. The RAIN Project positions Pakistan Railways to leverage technology to meet evolving demands while maintaining operational integrity and service quality. Officials affirmed that the phased approach ensures careful planning, budget management, and alignment with long-term infrastructure objectives, marking a significant milestone in the modernization of Pakistan’s rail network.
