The Sindh government is preparing to launch a women-only electric taxi service that will be operated by female drivers and exclusively serve female passengers, Senior Minister for Information, Transport and Mass Transit Sharjeel Inam Memon announced during a meeting with a high-level delegation from the British High Commission at his residence.
The proposed e-taxi service is intended to give women a safer and more convenient transportation option while also creating new employment opportunities for female drivers. The initiative forms part of the provincial government’s broader effort to improve women’s mobility and encourage greater participation by women in social and economic activities across Sindh.
Alongside the e-taxi service, the Sindh government is working on developing electric vehicle charging stations and other basic infrastructure aimed at promoting investment in electric vehicles across the province. Memon also referenced the government’s initiative to provide free pink electric scooters to working women and students, describing the program as a way to make transportation more accessible and strengthen women’s economic and social independence.
The minister pointed to a significant rise in the number of women applying for driving licenses in Sindh, noting that applications have grown from around 450 a few years ago to roughly 25,000 today, a shift he attributed to changing perceptions around women driving cars and motorcycles. Memon said the Sindh government remains committed to providing women with equal opportunities across every field, framing the planned e-taxi service as part of a wider set of initiatives supporting women’s independence and mobility across the province.
