Pakistan’s cinema landscape has reached a new frontier with the premiere of The Next Salahuddin, the country’s first feature-length film created entirely using artificial intelligence. The film debuted at Nueplex Cinema in Karachi, attracting media professionals, cultural figures, and industry guests to witness what is being described as an innovative fusion of technology and storytelling. Developed under the vision of writer and director Farhan Siddiqui, and produced by veteran artist Ustad Asim Ismail, the project explores contemporary realities through a narrative grounded in history, demonstrating AI’s potential to reshape filmmaking in Pakistan.
Farhan Siddiqui described the project as a completely novel experience for audiences and the local film industry. The film was produced without actors, physical shooting locations, or traditional sets, yet Siddiqui says viewers will experience a seamless narrative as if watching a conventional film. The AI-driven approach allowed the creative team to manage production entirely from a single location, addressing typical challenges such as actor availability, location logistics, and on-ground shooting risks. By integrating advanced AI tools, The Next Salahuddin has achieved a level of visual and narrative quality designed to resonate with younger audiences accustomed to fast-paced, digital-first content.
At 55 minutes, the film is structured like a continuous reel, designed to maintain engagement from start to finish while offering audiences moments to laugh, cry, and reflect. Ustad Asim Ismail emphasized that the story embodies themes of humanity, peace, and human rights, including solidarity with the people of Palestine, positioning the film as a socially conscious narrative that also showcases Pakistan’s emerging capability in AI-driven creative industries. Industry voices, including writer and director Talal Farhat, highlighted the need for Pakistani filmmakers to move beyond stereotypical storylines centered on violence, feudal conflicts, and formulaic family dramas, advocating instead for experimental approaches suited to digital and AI-powered storytelling.
The Next Salahuddin is set to reach international audiences, with planned releases in multiple languages including Urdu, English, Bengali, and Arabic. The filmmakers have also announced submissions to an international film competition in France in March, along with screenings in Malaysia, marking a strategic effort to present Pakistan’s AI-driven cinematic innovation on the global stage. The project demonstrates the growing intersection of artificial intelligence, technology, and cultural production, positioning Pakistani filmmakers to explore new modes of storytelling while engaging both local and international audiences in an increasingly digital era.
