Developer 4A Games and publisher Plaion have officially confirmed that METRO 2039 will launch on Thursday, February 4, 2027. The announcement was made during Sony’s latest State of Play presentation, providing gamers with the exact release date after the title had previously been scheduled for a February 2027 launch window. By arriving early in the month, METRO 2039 secures its place before several other highly anticipated releases, making it one of the first major premium games to reach players during what is expected to be one of the busiest months in recent gaming history.
The February 4 release date places METRO 2039 ahead of several blockbuster titles scheduled for later in the month. Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis is set to launch on February 12, followed by God of War Laufey on February 16, Persona 4 Revival on February 18, and Fable on February 23. Even before February begins, the gaming calendar is already crowded with major releases, including Stranger Than Heaven from RGG Studio on January 15 and FireSprite’s Until Dawn 2 on January 28. Despite the intense competition, 4A Games has positioned METRO 2039 to arrive before the bulk of these releases, giving the title an opportunity to attract players ahead of the month’s busiest launch period. The release date announcement was accompanied by new gameplay footage, offering a closer look at the upcoming first person shooter running on PlayStation 5 Pro hardware.
Alongside the new gameplay presentation, 4A Games confirmed several technical details for the console versions of METRO 2039. According to the developer, the PlayStation 5 Pro edition will support 4K resolution at 60 frames per second while also featuring ray tracing. The studio stated that the same performance target applies to the standard PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X versions as well. While the announcement did not specify additional enhancements exclusive to the PlayStation 5 Pro, it suggests that Sony’s upgraded console may offer a smoother overall experience or additional graphical improvements that could be revealed closer to launch. The game’s visual quality has already attracted industry recognition after receiving the Best Visuals award at Gamescom, highlighting the studio’s continued focus on delivering high quality graphics and immersive environments.
The release date announcement follows recent discussions by key members of the development team regarding the game’s production. In an interview with Wccftech, Game Director Andriy Shevchenko and Executive Producer Jon Bloch explained the challenges of developing a triple A title while much of 4A Games continues to operate from Ukraine during the ongoing war. They also shared that METRO 2039 draws inspiration from the entire Metro series, incorporating elements from Metro 2033, Metro Last Light, and Metro Exodus to create a new experience for players. By combining gameplay systems and storytelling ideas from previous entries while introducing new technical advancements, the studio aims to deliver the next chapter in the Metro franchise when the game arrives on February 4, 2027.
