Rockstar’s GTA VI: An Extended Look, the broadcast that debuted exclusively on Netflix before landing everywhere else six hours later, has topped weekly views on the premiere streaming service. Netflix’s own figures give the preview 31.1 million views across four days, counted from its debut on Thursday, August 27, through Sunday, August 30, making it the most watched title on the platform that week.

The special broadcast was classified under Netflix’s English language film list, where it placed first in 87 of the 93 countries the platform tracks globally. Second place went to The Whisper Man with 23.2 million views, a gap of nearly eight million. On the TV side, documentary Death of the Pastor’s Wife led with 19 million views, and the third season of Tyler Perry’s Beauty in Black followed with 13 million, meaning the Rockstar broadcast comfortably cleared the top titles across every category Netflix ranks. The same video has topped 18 million views on Rockstar’s own YouTube channel, a figure that covers only the official upload and does not account for the countless reuploads circulating elsewhere.

That level of demand put real strain on Netflix itself. As reported by many subscribers on social media, the streaming app crashed almost immediately on the night of the broadcast. According to Sensor Tower data, Netflix’s US mobile viewership rose 35 percent hour over hour during the preview, with mobile app users up 50 percent compared to the average for the same time across the previous 12 Thursdays, and web traffic rising 125 percent above average, which ultimately took the platform down. Even Twitch, where creators were reacting live to the preview, reportedly experienced outages of its own about an hour after the premiere.

Netflix’s VP of Nonfiction Series, Brandon Riegg, explained the unusual partnership ahead of the broadcast, describing Grand Theft Auto reveals as cultural moments in their own right and calling the anticipation around GTA VI unprecedented. Sensor Tower Senior Insights Analyst Abe Yousef said aligning with the launch of a highly anticipated console title has helped Netflix convert heightened consumer interest into re-engagement from lapsed viewers and sign-ups from non-subscribers. GTA VI launches November 19 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series S and X.
