Pakistan Telecommunication Authority has announced that the Device Identification Registration and Blocking System will undergo a planned temporary shutdown this weekend due to scheduled maintenance work by the Federal Board of Revenue. According to the notification, the system will go offline at ten in the evening on Saturday, 6 December, and normal services are expected to resume by the evening of Sunday, 7 December 2025. During this period, new device registrations and associated verification services will not be accessible to the public. Authorities have advised individuals planning to register their imported or SIM based handsets to complete the process before the maintenance window in order to avoid disruption.
DIRBS functions as a central component of Pakistan’s mobile device verification framework, operated jointly by PTA and FBR to prevent the circulation of non compliant or illegally imported devices. The platform verifies the legitimacy of handsets operating on local networks, supports duty compliance, and curbs grey market activity within the mobile device ecosystem. While the announced pause is officially tied to maintenance work, some observers within the telecom sector have noted that such system updates occasionally precede adjustments in mobile duties or tax policies. At present, no such changes have been confirmed, yet the timing has generated conversation within industry circles given the ongoing discussions around mobile import regulations.
PTA has requested the public to cooperate during the scheduled downtime and assured that services will return once the maintenance activity reaches completion. The authority has encouraged users to stay attentive to updates issued by both PTA and FBR in case the maintenance period is extended or if new instructions are provided regarding device registration processes. Many consumers rely on timely handset registration to ensure that their phones remain operational on local networks, and any extended interruption could affect individuals who recently purchased imported devices or who plan to register phones brought from overseas.
The temporary suspension has also prompted renewed discussion on the broader role of DIRBS in Pakistan’s telecom environment. Since its introduction, the system has contributed to increased transparency in the device market and improved compliance with import regulations. Its utilisation has reduced the circulation of unregistered handsets and allowed authorities to better track devices that enter the country through various channels. For mobile operators, DIRBS has supported cleaner network operations by limiting unauthorised handset activity. As the system undergoes maintenance, stakeholders across the mobile supply chain are monitoring whether any modifications in functionality or policy may follow the routine update.
With PTA and FBR coordinating closely on the scheduled work, the telecom sector will continue observing the situation for further guidance. The temporary pause reflects ongoing efforts to maintain critical digital infrastructure, ensuring that verification and registration tools remain aligned with regulatory needs. Public advisories are expected should any additional service adjustments or new directives arise once the system comes back online.
