D&D Announces First Official Star Wars Crossover Expansion

Wizards of the Coast has confirmed that Dungeons and Dragons will receive its first official Star Wars themed expansion, announcing the news during the opening day of Gen Con 2026 in Indianapolis. The reveal came near the end of the event’s keynote presentation, with the announcement itself delivered in an unconventional way that drew immediate attention from fans in attendance. The crossover is expected to launch sometime in 2027, marking the first time the two long running franchises will be combined under D&D’s standard tabletop ruleset.

Dungeons and Dragons recently marked its fiftieth anniversary in 2026, a milestone reached after roughly 1,200 official supplements were released across the franchise’s history, including more than 800 titles published by original creator TSR Inc before Wizards of the Coast took over the brand in 2000. Despite this extensive catalog, the game had never previously featured an official Star Wars expansion built on its core rules. The two properties did cross paths once before, when Wizards of the Coast published a standalone Star Wars Roleplaying Game in 2000 using the D&D derived d20 system, releasing close to three dozen books and accessories across three editions over a seven year run, though that product was never marketed as part of the main Dungeons and Dragons line.

The new crossover has been placed under Wizards of the Coast’s Universes Beyond banner, specifically within a roadmap the company is calling Season of Rebellion. Details about the expansion’s exact format and scope have not yet been shared, and the company’s description of the project as a partnership leaves open the possibility that it could span a coordinated set of sourcebooks, digital content and adventures, or represent a more standard licensing arrangement.

The Universes Beyond initiative as a whole is set to begin on November 17, 2026, with a World of Warcraft themed Dungeons and Dragons expansion launching the program ahead of the Star Wars release. Unlike the more tightly guarded Star Wars announcement, Wizards of the Coast has already shared extensive details about the World of Warcraft expansion, confirming it will include new subclasses, playable species, spells, equipment, professions, monsters, bosses, factions and seven dungeons as part of a complete gameplay expansion. Since World of Warcraft’s dungeon crawling structure aligns naturally with existing D&D systems, while Star Wars tabletop settings have historically relied on different mechanical frameworks, fans are watching closely to see how the studio adapts the science fiction universe into Dungeons and Dragons’ traditional fantasy focused ruleset when the expansion arrives next year.
