PTCL Group has announced that internet services in Pakistan may face disruptions after damage was reported to submarine cables in Saudi waters near Jeddah. The company confirmed that the issue has affected partial bandwidth capacity on two major international systems, SMW4 and IMEWE, which play a critical role in carrying internet traffic to and from Pakistan. As a result, users may experience slower speeds, particularly during peak hours, until restoration is complete.

According to PTCL, its international partners are already working on priority to repair the affected submarine cable systems. Such repairs often require specialized equipment and time due to the depth and complexity of undersea infrastructure. To minimize the disruption, PTCL stated that its local teams are taking measures to arrange alternative bandwidth through other routes to balance the traffic load and ensure customers continue to have access to essential services. The company also expressed its appreciation for the patience of users while restoration work continues.

This incident highlights the dependency of Pakistan’s internet ecosystem on a limited number of submarine cables, which form the backbone of the country’s international connectivity. Disruptions of this nature not only impact general browsing speeds but can also affect businesses, financial transactions, and digital services that rely on stable international connections. With increasing demand for high-speed connectivity, even short-term disruptions create challenges for operators, enterprises, and individuals who rely heavily on uninterrupted access to digital platforms.

The damage to the SMW4 and IMEWE systems underscores the importance of resilient network planning and investments in diversified routes to avoid bottlenecks. PTCL’s immediate response in rerouting traffic demonstrates the operator’s efforts to manage service continuity under unforeseen circumstances. However, full restoration is dependent on the completion of repairs by international teams currently mobilized for the task. For now, customers across Pakistan are being advised to expect fluctuations in quality during high-usage hours, while gradual improvements are anticipated as alternative bandwidth arrangements take effect.
