Pakistan Engineering Council recently organized a brainstorming session and consultative workshop aimed at addressing the challenges faced by Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) in the Punjab Central region. The initiative, which aligns with the vision of Chairman PEC Engr. Waseem Nazir, was hosted by the University of Lahore and brought together key stakeholders from various sectors, including students, parents, alumni, academia, industry representatives, and government officials. This collaborative gathering highlighted the growing importance of reforming engineering education and enhancing the status of the engineering profession within Pakistan’s academic and societal frameworks.

The workshop served as a platform for consolidating insights gathered from earlier discussions. It was attended by the Chairman PEC, who acted as the chief guest, along with PEC Governing Body members and senior academicians. The session’s primary objective was to engage experts and stakeholders in shaping the future of engineering education, aligning it with the emerging needs of the industry and the rapid advancements in technology. The consultative session was part of a larger nationwide initiative that covers nine clusters and involves 130 HEIs across Pakistan.

In his address, Chairman PEC Engr. Waseem Nazir emphasized the significance of this workshop as part of the overarching reform agenda to address the growing demands of the engineering sector. The chairman further outlined the PEC Governing Body’s commitment to enhancing the relevance of engineering education in Pakistan and fostering global competitiveness.

“This initiative is designed to address the growing needs of the engineering sector, future challenges, and the latest skill requirements. We aim to align engineering education with emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence, and equip graduates with the expertise needed to tackle evolving global challenges,”

The event witnessed the participation of prominent figures from the PEC, including Vice Chairman PEC Punjab Dr. Suhail Aftab Qureshi and Governing Body members Engr. Usman Farooq, Engr. Dr. Naveed Ramzan, Engr. Dr. Khalid Farooq, and Engr. Dr. Noor Sheikh. Renowned academic figures, including Dr. Shahid Masud from LUMS, Dr. Shahid Munir (Vice Chancellor UET Lahore), Dr. Mujahid Kamran (former VC Punjab University), Engr. Haider Ali Khan from Lahore Leads University, and Dr. Fayaz Hussain Shah from the University of Lahore, also contributed to the discussions, underscoring the critical importance of this initiative.

The participation of these respected scholars and professionals highlighted the workshop’s role in addressing pressing issues within Pakistan’s engineering education sector. Vice Chancellors and representatives from several HEIs who attended the event acknowledged the PEC’s efforts as a crucial step toward strengthening the country’s engineering education system. These educational leaders pointed out that the gap between academia and industry needs to be bridged for graduates to be equipped with the skills required to succeed in a competitive job market.

“This effort will help fill the gap between education and the job market by ensuring that engineering programs are aligned with industry needs and global trends.”

The vice chancellors remarked. Their collective view emphasized the importance of producing job-ready graduates capable of meeting the ever-evolving demands of both local and global industries. By addressing these concerns, PEC’s initiative is seen as a vital move in the direction of a future-ready engineering workforce, prepared to contribute to Pakistan’s growth in technology-driven sectors.

Through these discussions and collaborative efforts, PEC aims to forge a path toward modernizing engineering education and reinforcing the connection between academia and industry, ensuring that students graduate with the skills needed to thrive in the digital age. This event marks an important step in the ongoing journey to reform Pakistan’s engineering education system, preparing the next generation of engineers to meet the challenges and opportunities of the global economy.
