Muhammad Hashir, a student from Balochistan Residential College Loralai, earned recognition for Pakistan by securing a bronze medal at the International Junior Science Olympiad 2025, a global competition that brings together talented students under the age of sixteen. The event was held in Sirius, Russia from November 23 to December 2 and included participants from eighty countries competing in Physics, Chemistry and Biology. Hashir distinguished himself among hundreds of young contenders with strong analytical performance and skillful responses during the examination stages. His accomplishment has been celebrated across the country as an example of how committed students from diverse regions of Pakistan can excel in global scientific arenas when given the right academic environment and guidance.
Pakistan’s delegation for the Olympiad consisted of six students chosen through a competitive national selection process conducted by Pakistan Science Foundation in collaboration with the Ministry of Science and Technology. In addition to Hashir, the team included Muhammad Zakariya from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Faisal Sattar from Balochistan, Mahendra Maheshwari from Sindh, Yasir Habib from Punjab and Hamdan Ishaq representing the Federal region. These students participated in both theoretical and experimental rounds, which required thorough preparation across core scientific disciplines. Their team leaders provided mentorship throughout the event, helping them navigate the complex structure of the competition and maintain confidence in an international setting filled with advanced science challenges. The coordinated effort behind the delegation was seen as fundamental to enabling students to perform at a level comparable with peers from countries known for strong STEM programs.
The International Junior Science Olympiad is regarded as a platform that identifies young scientific thinkers and encourages participants to demonstrate skills in problem solving, experimentation and conceptual understanding. Countries that join the Olympiad view it as an opportunity not only to compete but also to showcase their investment in science education. For Pakistan, participation reaffirmed efforts to support STEM learning at school level and highlighted the role of national institutions in bringing forward promising students from both urban and rural areas. The event also provided Pakistani students exposure to diverse scientific approaches practiced by competitors from different regions of the world, helping broaden their perspective and understanding of international academic benchmarks.
Officials from Pakistan Science Foundation and the Ministry of Science and Technology congratulated the entire team for their dedication, underscoring that Hashir’s success represents the combined contribution of mentors, institutions and families committed to nurturing scientific curiosity. His bronze medal is being celebrated as an encouraging sign for the future of young scientists in Pakistan. The achievement is expected to motivate students nationwide to develop stronger interest in science and pursue opportunities that challenge them to think creatively. The recognition also strengthens the message that with structured support, Pakistani youth have the potential to succeed in global competitions that evaluate scientific capability at advanced levels.
