Karachi is set to see the introduction of double-decker buses and electric buses (EV buses) as part of the city’s expanding public transport network. The Sindh government announced that the new buses will begin operations next week, with additional routes of the People’s Bus Service planned for other districts of Sindh. Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon chaired a meeting with key transport officials, including Transport Secretary Asad Zaman, SMTMA Managing Director Kanwal Nizam Bhutto, TransKarachi CEO Fawad Ghaffar Soomro, and Yellow Line BRT Project Director Zamir Abbasi, to review ongoing projects and discuss preparations for the new services.
Officials provided updates on the progress of the Yellow Line and Red Line BRT projects, highlighting infrastructure development and operational readiness. In addition to the buses, the government is preparing to launch an EV taxi service in Karachi and is entering the second phase of the Pink Scooties Scheme, aimed at promoting sustainable urban mobility. Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon stated that the double-decker and electric buses are expected to arrive in the city next week, with new routes being introduced to serve commuters more efficiently. He added that the EV taxi service is targeted to begin by December, and an additional 500 buses will be added during the current financial year to enhance the city’s public transport network.
The minister emphasized that operational preparations for the new routes must be completed promptly. Training programs for women and female students to safely operate scooties are also being introduced in all divisional headquarters. Minister Memon directed transport officials to expedite work on the Yellow Line BRT, focusing on the completion of depots, infrastructure, and relocation of utilities to avoid delays. He also mentioned that the second phase of the Taj Haider Bridge will commence soon, noting that two-way traffic has already been restored on the bridge to improve connectivity.
The expansion of public transport reflects the Sindh government’s focus on modernizing urban mobility and providing sustainable transport options. By integrating double-decker and electric buses, EV taxis, and new People’s Bus Service routes, the government aims to improve accessibility for commuters across Karachi and surrounding districts. Officials highlighted that ongoing development work, including BRT projects and supporting infrastructure, is being closely monitored to ensure timely completion. These measures are intended to make commuting more efficient, reduce congestion, and promote environmentally friendly transportation options in the city.
