Final Fantasy VII Revelation, the upcoming third and final entry in Square Enix’s Final Fantasy VII Remake trilogy, is being designed to encourage players to return for multiple playthroughs. Director Naoki Hamaguchi has revealed that although a single playthrough will offer a similar overall amount of gameplay to Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, players will not be able to experience everything the game has to offer in one run. The differences will come through player choices, branching side content and different experiences throughout the journey, giving players reasons to revisit the game after completing it once. Hamaguchi has also previously clarified that the game will have one definitive ending, meaning replayability will come from differences within the journey rather than completely separate conclusions.
Hamaguchi explained that Final Fantasy VII Revelation is roughly comparable to Rebirth in terms of the amount of content available during a single playthrough, although the total volume of possible experiences can make the new game difficult to compare directly with its predecessor. Player decisions can affect how certain parts of the game unfold, particularly through side content and character-focused experiences. This approach is intended to give players different experiences depending on the choices they make rather than simply allowing them to complete the same activities in a different order. According to Hamaguchi, the team wanted choices to have a more noticeable effect on individual player experiences while keeping the central narrative intact.
The director has also been clear that these choices will not lead to multiple endings. Hamaguchi said there is only one ending and that the overall direction of the story remains unchanged. Instead, the developers have focused on expanding the main experience through side content and branching paths that can be influenced by players. This means two players may encounter different side stories, character interactions or other optional experiences during their respective playthroughs while ultimately reaching the same conclusion. The structure allows Square Enix to preserve the central story of the Final Fantasy VII remake project while providing additional reasons for players to explore the game more than once.
The scale of Final Fantasy VII Revelation is also reflected in recent demonstrations and previews. The game is set to bring together the full party and expand exploration across the Final Fantasy VII world, with the Highwind playing an important role in the broader experience. A recent preview of the game described one explorable Highwind area as potentially taking around 20 hours to complete fully, although that estimate applied to the specific previewed area rather than the entire game. The third installment is planned for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch 2, with the PlayStation 5 release currently listed for April 8, 2027. With its combination of a large world, branching side content and player-dependent experiences, Final Fantasy VII Revelation is shaping up as a finale where seeing everything will require more than a single journey through the story.
