A global team of scientists led by China has unveiled an advanced artificial intelligence model, DePTH-GPT, aimed at transforming the study and understanding of the deep ocean. Developed as part of the Digital DEPTH project under the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development, the model represents a significant step in enhancing global research capabilities and fostering collaborative governance of deep-sea environments. By integrating multiple AI disciplines, including deep learning, large language models, computer vision and knowledge reasoning, the project underscores the growing role of artificial intelligence in large-scale environmental and marine studies.
The DePTH-GPT model processes diverse data sources such as video footage, topographical maps, hydrodynamic simulations, sediment samples and bioacoustic data, enabling researchers to gain a more complete understanding of deep-sea ecosystems. Its ability to analyze vast amounts of data allows scientists to transition from traditional qualitative observation methods to more sophisticated, data-driven insights. According to the Second Institute of Oceanography under the Ministry of Natural Resources, DePTH-GPT has already demonstrated its potential by creating an intelligent cognitive system for studying a deep-sea seamount and a hydrothermal vent field, both of which are complex environments critical to understanding marine biodiversity and geochemical cycles.
The initiative also highlights a broader shift in how oceanographic data is collected and interpreted. By integrating AI with ocean science, researchers aim to make exploration more precise, efficient and globally collaborative. The Digital DEPTH project focuses on mapping and studying deep-sea habitats, offering a scalable framework that can be adopted by international institutions. The model’s architecture supports both interpretability and predictive analytics, enabling scientists to identify patterns and changes in deep-sea conditions that could inform conservation efforts, resource management and climate impact assessments.
Looking ahead, the developers plan to make DePTH-GPT accessible to research organizations and global scientific communities. Once widely available, it will allow institutions worldwide to develop their own intelligent cognitive systems for studying various marine environments, including abyssal plains, seamounts, hydrothermal vents and continental slopes. This collaborative approach aims to strengthen the global research ecosystem, encouraging shared data, standardized methodologies and joint exploration projects. Through these efforts, DePTH-GPT is set to enhance not only scientific understanding but also sustainable management of one of Earth’s most complex and least explored frontiers—the deep ocean.
