Meta is pausing rate limits it had introduced for the Conversation Focus feature on its smart glasses, an accessibility tool that uses the glasses’ speakers to amplify the voice of the person a wearer is talking to. A Meta spokesperson said the company had heard feedback from users and was pausing its subscription tests for the feature for now, adding that Conversation Focus will remain available free of charge through the company’s Early Access Program while it works on a better approach.

Last month, Meta had quietly added rate limits to the Conversation Focus feature, allowing free use only up to three hours per month before requiring a subscription to the $20 a month Meta One Premium Plan, which itself carried a cap of 15 hours of monthly use. The rationale behind the limits remained unclear, since the feature has been shown to run entirely on the device itself without requiring an internet connection, raising questions about why usage restrictions were applied at all.

While Meta has reversed course on the rate limits for now, the company has not provided clarity on the feature’s long term future. A company spokesperson said Meta wants to make sure it gets the approach right and is still exploring its options for how to handle the feature going forward. The spokesperson also indicated that some premium features are likely to become subscription based over time, tying this strategy to how charging for select features helps Meta sustain its broader approach of subsidizing hardware prices across its device lineup.

The episode reflects the balancing act Meta faces as it expands its smart glasses ecosystem, weighing user goodwill around accessibility focused features against the company’s stated interest in eventually monetizing premium software capabilities. For now, users of Meta’s AI glasses can continue accessing Conversation Focus without a subscription, though the company’s acknowledgment that premium features may eventually move behind a paywall suggests this reversal may prove temporary rather than a permanent policy shift.
