In a significant step toward improving Pakistan’s climate resilience and agricultural sustainability, Pakistan and China have signed an agreement worth around RMB 5 billion to modernize Pakistan’s aging water management and irrigation systems. Under the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed last month, Pakistan’s Cyclon Tech and China’s Shaanxi Water Development and Construction Group will jointly implement advanced smart water conservancy projects across Pakistan. This collaboration is designed to combine China’s extensive engineering expertise in water management with Pakistan’s operational and local knowledge, creating a powerful model for modernizing essential water infrastructure nationwide.
Modernizing Pakistan’s Water Infrastructure
According to Cyclon Tech CEO Tausif Abbas, Pakistan’s current water systems face severe structural challenges that have persisted for decades. These include aging canal networks, inefficient water distribution, limited storage capacity, and a lack of digital oversight, all of which contribute to substantial water loss and agricultural inefficiencies. As a result, farmers and communities across rural Pakistan have faced recurring irrigation shortages and crop damage during droughts and floods.
Abbas emphasized that the collaboration with China will introduce digital monitoring platforms and smart irrigation solutions modeled after China’s successful water management systems. These technologies will allow for real-time tracking of water flow, usage, and storage conditions, ultimately reducing waste and improving productivity. “We want to reduce water loss, improve agricultural productivity, and create systems that can withstand future climatic stresses,” Abbas said in a statement quoted by China Economic Net.
