Apple is developing a new feature that will allow iPhone users in the European Union to copy and paste supported content directly between their smartphones and Windows PCs. The planned clipboard synchronization would expand cross-device functionality beyond Apple’s existing ecosystem, where Universal Clipboard already enables content sharing between compatible Apple devices. Under the proposed system, users would be able to copy text and other supported content on an iPhone and paste it onto a Windows PC, while content copied on a Windows computer could also be pasted onto an iPhone. Apple expects the feature to require significant engineering work and does not anticipate completing development before fall 2027. The development follows an interoperability request submitted by Microsoft through Apple’s European Union Interoperability Request system, with Apple beginning work on the request in March 2026.
The planned feature is intended to make clipboard sharing work in the background without requiring an application to remain open in the foreground. Once implemented, users would not need to repeatedly open an app or manually initiate every transfer between their iPhone and Windows computer. Apple also plans to allow developers to create extensions that can share and import clipboard content between paired devices, including Windows PCs. The proposed approach would require users to provide one-time permission before clipboard sharing becomes active, giving them control over which paired devices can access and exchange clipboard information. This permission-based approach is particularly relevant because clipboard data can include sensitive information that users copy during everyday activities, making controlled access an important part of cross-device synchronization.
Microsoft initiated the interoperability request because existing iPhone clipboard restrictions prevent third-party applications from continuously synchronizing clipboard content with Windows devices in the background. Apple’s own Universal Clipboard currently provides a similar experience across its ecosystem, allowing users to move content between supported Apple devices. However, that functionality does not provide the same native experience between an iPhone and a Windows PC. Microsoft argued that cross-device copy and paste is an important productivity feature for people who use different platforms across their primary devices. Apple initially assessed the request through its European Union interoperability process before moving forward with a proposed solution. The development is linked to the European Union’s Digital Markets Act, which requires designated technology companies to provide greater interoperability with third-party products and services in certain circumstances.
Apple plans to make the clipboard synchronization capability available first through a developer beta after development is completed, followed by a public release after testing. The company currently expects development to reach completion in fall 2027, meaning consumers will have to wait considerably longer before the feature becomes generally available. Apple has also not confirmed whether iPhone to Windows clipboard synchronization will be introduced outside the European Union. Since the project stems from the European Union’s interoperability framework, the initial rollout could remain limited to users in the region, although Apple could decide to expand availability to other markets in the future. If launched as planned, the feature would provide a more direct connection between iPhones and Windows PCs, allowing users to transfer supported clipboard content in both directions without relying on the existing limitations surrounding third-party access to iPhone clipboard data.
