In a major development aimed at bolstering the country’s agriculture and infrastructure, the Pakistani government has secured two financing agreements totaling $500 million with the World Bank. The agreements, namely the “Punjab Resilient and Inclusive Agriculture Transformation Project” and the “Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Accessibility Project,” were formally signed by representatives from both parties.
The signing ceremony, which took place at an official event, saw Dr. Kazim Niaz, Secretary of the Ministry of Economic Affairs, sign on behalf of the Pakistani government, while Najy Benhassine, Country Director of the World Bank, signed on behalf of the international financial institution.
The primary goal of the “Punjab Resilient and Inclusive Agriculture Transformation Project” is to enhance the livelihoods of farmers, with a particular focus on small and medium landowners. The project aims to achieve this by improving access to agricultural water and increasing productivity within the sector. Ultimately, the initiative seeks to transform Punjab’s agriculture industry into a more diverse, sustainable, and market-oriented sector, thus empowering farmers and enhancing the province’s economic landscape.
On the other hand, the “Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Accessibility Project” aims to address critical infrastructure needs in the region. By investing in safe and climate-resilient rural access, the project intends to improve connectivity to markets, schools, and healthcare facilities within the province. This move is expected to boost economic growth, stimulate development, and improve the quality of life for the people residing in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
During the event, Dr. Niaz emphasized the federal government’s unwavering commitment to supporting the provincial governments in fulfilling their budgetary requirements. This financial assistance is aimed at helping the provinces overcome development challenges and foster more inclusive and sustainable economic growth across the nation.
In addition to the aforementioned agreements, the collaboration between the World Bank and the Ministry of Economic Affairs extends further. In October, the two entities signed three additional substantial projects valued at $690 million, which included a notable $82 million grant. These projects will target areas such as land management, the expansion of Punjab’s housing market, and national-level interventions within the health sector.
With these recent financing agreements in place, Pakistan is gearing up to make significant strides in agricultural development and infrastructural improvements, paving the way for a more resilient, inclusive, and prosperous future for the nation.
