The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has taken strong action against fraudulent activities in the telecom sector, blocking a significant number of SIMs and IMEIs. During the last year, a total of 16,332 SIMs and 14,468 IMEIs involved in fraudulent activities were blocked by the PTA. This initiative aims to maintain the integrity of the telecom network and protect consumers from potential scams.
According to documents obtained by Propakistani, the PTA has been actively monitoring and addressing illegal activities. From July 2021 to June 2022, the PTA issued warnings to 77,602 mobile numbers identified as being involved in illegal activities. Additionally, 1,027 CNICs (Computerized National Identity Cards) linked to such activities have been blocked or blacklisted.
To address the issue of stolen mobile phones, the PTA has implemented an automated system called LSDS (Lost, Stolen, and Disable Device System). This system has proven to be effective, as it received over 38,000 requests for blocking or unblocking stolen mobile phones during the last year. Specifically, the PTA received 36,191 blocking requests for lost or stolen mobile phones and 2,729 requests for unblocking stolen or lost cell phones within the same period. The PTA ensures that all consumer requests for blocking or unblocking are approved within 24 hours, prioritizing swift action.
When the PTA’s system identifies IMEIs or Mobile Numbers involved in fraudulent activities, immediate action is taken to block them. In addition to blocking SIMs and IMEIs, identity cards associated with fraudulent activities receive warnings. In cases of repeated violations, the CNICs of fraudsters are flagged by the system and subsequently blacklisted for mobile subscriptions. This strict approach serves as a deterrent to potential fraudsters and reinforces the PTA’s commitment to maintaining a secure telecom environment.
PTA officials have also emphasized the importance of collaboration with the National Advanced Database Regulatory Authority (NADRA). Together, they are working on a live finger detection project to prevent the issuance of fake SIMs using stolen thumb impressions. By employing an LFD (Live Finger Detection) device, the PTA aims to accurately verify whether a fingerprint is real and captured from an individual present at the point of registration, or if it is fake and obtained through illegal means. This project is crucial in combating identity theft and ensuring the authenticity of SIM card registrations.
