Two major telecom operators, Ufone and Zong, have deposited 15 million dollars each as pre bid earnest money with Pakistan Telecommunication Authority ahead of the country’s 5G spectrum auction scheduled for March 10. With three days remaining before the February 27 deadline for deposits, total pre bid submissions have already reached 30 million dollars, signalling strong initial participation in what is expected to be one of Pakistan’s most significant spectrum sales in recent years.
Industry sources indicate that market leader Jazz is likely to submit its 15 million dollar earnest money within the next day or so. Observers note that opting out of the 5G auction is not a viable choice for the country’s largest telecom operator, given the strategic importance of next generation connectivity for long term competitiveness. If Jazz confirms its participation, the field will comprise three major players, setting the stage for a closely watched bidding process.
The government is reportedly targeting more than 600 million dollars in potential proceeds from the auction, depending on the level of competition among bidders. PTA has clarified that the auction will be deemed successful if at least 50 percent of the total 597 megahertz spectrum on offer is sold, meaning approximately 300 megahertz must be allocated. In practical terms, if three operators actively participate and secure spectrum blocks, the minimum success threshold could effectively be achieved, ensuring that the auction meets its baseline objective.
The 5G rollout is expected to unlock ultra fast mobile broadband, support low latency applications, enable industrial Internet of Things deployments, and facilitate smart city initiatives and enterprise grade connectivity solutions. However, operators are entering the bidding process at a time when the telecom sector faces mounting challenges, including high taxation, rising energy costs, and persistent margin pressures. How aggressively companies bid on March 10 is likely to reflect their confidence in Pakistan’s digital economy and their appetite for long term infrastructure investment.
With Ufone and Zong having already secured their positions through earnest money deposits and Jazz anticipated to follow, the competitive landscape for the 5G auction is nearly defined. The final days before the deadline are expected to confirm the lineup of participants and determine whether the spectrum sale evolves into a high intensity contest or a measured strategic exercise by operators balancing ambition with financial caution.
