Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has taken immediate notice of the new solar regulations issued by the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority NEPRA and directed the Power Division to file a review petition. The Prime Minister emphasized that the review should safeguard the contracts and rights of the country’s 466,000 existing solar users, ensuring that their obligations are not unfairly transferred to the over 37.6 million consumers who rely entirely on the national grid.

The instructions were issued during a high-level special meeting held in Islamabad to assess the implications of NEPRA’s updated regulations. The Prime Minister tasked the Power Division with formulating a comprehensive action plan to address potential challenges and ensure a balanced approach between promoting solar energy and protecting consumer interests.

The meeting was attended by Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, Federal Ministers Ahsan Iqbal, Attaullah Tarar, Ali Pervaiz Malik, Sardar Owais Khan Laghari, Minister of State Bilal Azhar Kiani, Privatization Advisor Muhammad Ali, and other senior officials. The decision reflects the government’s focus on maintaining a fair and transparent energy policy while fostering renewable energy adoption in Pakistan.

By filing the review petition, the administration aims to provide clarity and assurance to existing solar users, mitigate financial impact on grid-dependent consumers, and support a sustainable regulatory framework for Pakistan’s solar energy sector. The initiative highlights the government’s commitment to balancing renewable energy growth with consumer protection and equitable policy implementation.
