Pakistan’s 5G spectrum auction has been officially postponed to March 10, 2026, according to Pakistan Telecommunication Authority. The delay shifts the nation’s transition into the 5G era but offers telecom operators additional time to prepare amid complex auction formats and spectrum pricing considerations. Multiple frequency bands will be offered during the auction to enable faster data speeds, low-latency connectivity, and emerging technologies such as AI, industrial automation, smart cities, and advanced digital services.
The auction was initially scheduled for February 26, 2026, but the timeline was revised following a thorough review by the Auction Advisory Committee. The committee, chaired by Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb and attended by IT Minister Shaza Fatima Khawaja, evaluated spectrum availability, procedural milestones, and industry feedback to ensure a transparent and well-structured process. PTA officials emphasized that the additional preparation period would help operators and stakeholders address technical and regulatory requirements while facilitating fair competition.
The updated schedule allows for a consultation period on the Information Memorandum until February 6, 2026, with final publication set for February 13. An information session for applicants will take place on February 16, followed by an application deadline with pre-bid deposits on February 27. Qualified bidders are expected to be announced by March 3, ahead of the auction itself. The auction will cover approximately 597.2 MHz of spectrum across low, mid, and high bands, including 700 MHz, 1800 MHz, 2100 MHz, 2300 MHz, 2600 MHz, and the globally preferred 3500 MHz band, ensuring nationwide coverage and sufficient capacity for future 5G services.
PTA officials highlighted that the auction represents a significant step in Pakistan’s 5G rollout, noting its potential to accelerate data speeds, reduce latency, and enable advanced applications. Winning bidders will be required to submit performance bank guarantees within 15 business days following the auction, with commercial 5G services anticipated to launch within six to seven months, depending on network readiness and regulatory compliance. Industry analysts have noted that while the delay postpones immediate 5G availability, the extra preparation time is likely to support smoother deployment and reduce operational hurdles for telecom operators.
The move also comes amid growing interest in leveraging 5G for AI-driven services, IoT-enabled solutions, and digital infrastructure enhancements, reinforcing Pakistan’s commitment to expanding next-generation mobile connectivity. PTA continues to engage stakeholders to ensure a structured and competitive auction, with the broader objective of positioning the country to benefit from global 5G trends and supporting innovation in mobile broadband, enterprise connectivity, and smart city initiatives.
