A PlayStation 5 emulator has made significant progress by running portions of the PlayStation 5 version of Grand Theft Auto V on a Windows PC at between 40 and 60 frames per second. The development comes ahead of Grand Theft Auto VI’s November 19 release for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, while Rockstar Games has not announced a PC release date for the upcoming title. The latest progress with KytyPS5 has renewed speculation that advances in PlayStation 5 emulation could eventually allow GTA 6 to run on PC before an official PC version becomes available.
The latest footage, shared by emulator community members, shows the PlayStation 5 version of GTA V running through sequences from the North Yankton section at roughly 40 to 60 frames per second. The test was conducted on a high-end system featuring an AMD Ryzen 9 9950X3D processor and Radeon RX 7900 XT graphics card. However, the achievement should not be interpreted as a fully playable version of GTA V through the emulator. The current build continues to experience graphical glitches, missing assets, and frequent crashes. The progress is nevertheless notable because KytyPS5 had only recently reached the stage of booting GTA V to its menus, demonstrating how quickly compatibility has improved in a short period.
KytyPS5 is an open-source PlayStation 5 emulator designed for Windows and Linux, with experimental support for macOS. Its developers describe the project as being in an early stage, with limited compatibility and ongoing work focused primarily on improving game compatibility and boot reliability. The emulator can now boot 2D games and a selection of 3D titles, including games built using Unreal Engine 4, Unreal Engine 5, Unity, and custom game engines. Other PlayStation 5 games have also demonstrated progress through the project, although performance, graphical accuracy, and stability vary significantly between titles.
The interest in GTA 6 is largely connected to Rockstar’s decision to launch the game on consoles first. Grand Theft Auto VI is scheduled for November 19, 2026, on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, but Rockstar has yet to confirm a PC version or release window. Previous Rockstar titles, including GTA V and Red Dead Redemption 2, arrived on PC after their initial console launches, leading to expectations of another delay for GTA 6. While the rapid development of PS5 emulation makes the possibility of running future games more interesting, GTA 6 would be considerably more demanding than GTA V, meaning current emulator progress does not indicate that the game can actually run on PC before its official release. For now, the latest KytyPS5 milestone mainly demonstrates how quickly PlayStation 5 emulation technology is advancing and how that progress could eventually affect access to console-exclusive games.
