Microsoft is preparing to introduce monthly time limits for Xbox Cloud Gaming, ending unlimited cloud access for Game Pass subscribers from November 2026. Under the new structure, Game Pass Ultimate subscribers will receive 15 hours of cloud gaming per month, while Premium subscribers will receive 10 hours and Essential subscribers will receive 5 hours. Microsoft said the change is expected to affect around 4 percent of Game Pass subscribers.

Once subscribers use their included monthly cloud gaming hours, they will be able to purchase additional playtime through the Xbox Store. Microsoft has not yet announced the pricing or specific purchase options for additional hours, saying more information will be provided before the changes take effect. The company said the new model is being introduced because the cost of providing cloud gaming increases as more people use the service and spend longer periods playing. Microsoft said limiting monthly usage will allow it to continue offering the service while investing in its reliability and performance.

The new limits represent a significant change for Game Pass subscribers who currently have access to cloud gaming without monthly hour restrictions. Xbox Cloud Gaming has become useful for players who want to play games without downloading them, access supported Xbox Series X|S titles on older Xbox One hardware, or play Xbox games on supported mobile and other devices. The restrictions could particularly affect users who rely on cloud gaming as an alternative to upgrading their hardware. Players who regularly use cloud streaming to test games before downloading them may also need to manage their monthly hours more carefully.

At the same time, Microsoft is opening Xbox Cloud Gaming to users who do not have a Game Pass subscription. Starting in November, players will be able to purchase cloud playtime through the Xbox Store and stream eligible games they already own on supported devices. The pay-as-you-go option is intended to provide an alternative for users who only want occasional cloud access without maintaining a recurring Game Pass subscription. Microsoft said cloud gaming availability, additional playtime options, and eligible games may vary by market. More details on pricing and availability are expected before the new system launches in November.
