Sony’s PlayStation division has reported a strong financial performance for the second quarter of fiscal year 2026, with operating income rising 83% year over year to ¥220.1 billion, as software sales and network services contributed to growth. The company’s Game and Network Services segment generated revenue of ¥1,208.5 billion for the quarter ended September 30, 2026, representing an 8.6% increase compared with the same period last year. The results highlight the expanding contribution of digital games, downloadable content and subscription-based services to PlayStation’s business. While the headline operating income increase was partly influenced by non-recurring charges recorded in the corresponding quarter a year earlier, the segment still delivered underlying growth of approximately 29% after those items are excluded. Sony also reported improved adjusted operating performance, reflecting continued demand for its gaming content and online ecosystem. The latest figures demonstrate how PlayStation’s business increasingly draws revenue from its installed console base, game catalogue and digital services alongside hardware sales.

Software remained a major contributor during the quarter, with combined full-game sales for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 reaching 88.2 million units, an increase of 7.9 million compared with the same period last year. Sales of Sony’s first-party titles rose 30% to 8.2 million units, indicating stronger contributions from games developed and published within the company’s own portfolio. Revenue from game software increased 12.6% to ¥708.5 billion, while digital full-game sales reached ¥330.8 billion, up 23% year over year. Add-on content revenue also recorded growth of 4.4%, reflecting continued purchases of downloadable expansions and additional in-game content. The digital distribution model remains an important part of PlayStation’s business, allowing players to purchase and access games through the PlayStation Store. Network Services also delivered positive results, with revenue increasing 19.5% to ¥218.3 billion. This segment includes services such as PlayStation Plus and advertising, while the broader online ecosystem continues to connect players through multiplayer gaming, digital purchases and subscription offerings.

Sony shipped 2.6 million PS5 consoles during the July-to-September quarter, compared with 4 million units in the corresponding period of the previous year. This brought cumulative worldwide PS5 shipments to approximately 97.9 million units by September 30, 2026. Despite the lower quarterly hardware volume, the console’s large installed base continues to provide a substantial audience for software releases and online services. PlayStation Network recorded 127 million monthly active users, compared with 119 million a year earlier, marking its highest second-quarter figure reported by Sony. The company also highlighted the performance of Marvel’s Wolverine, developed by Insomniac Games, which sold an estimated 2.4 million copies to consumers by November 4, around 50 days after its September 15 launch. The title’s performance adds to Sony’s first-party software results and demonstrates the commercial contribution of major exclusive releases. Together, the growth in full-game sales, digital revenue and monthly active users illustrates the importance of engagement across PlayStation’s ecosystem beyond the sale of individual consoles.

Following the quarterly performance, Sony raised its full-year forecast for the Game and Network Services division. The company increased its expected annual revenue from ¥4,540 billion to ¥4,830 billion and revised its operating income projection from ¥660 billion to ¥700 billion. The updated outlook reflects stronger expectations for third-party software sales, continued expansion in network services and cost reductions. Sony also identified changes to the release timing of a first-party title as a factor that could partially offset the improved outlook. The revised forecast points to continued investment in the PlayStation platform and its content business as the company works across console hardware, digital distribution and online subscriptions. The results also underline the importance of maintaining a broad game catalogue and an active player community, particularly as the gaming industry continues to evolve towards digital purchases and connected services. With nearly 98 million PS5 units shipped worldwide and PlayStation Network monthly active users reaching 127 million, Sony enters the remainder of the fiscal year with a substantial global audience for its games and services.
