Punjab has decided to introduce a separate 100-mark Global Citizenship subject in the school curriculum, with the new subject likely to be offered from the next academic year. The proposed subject is being developed with the support of UNICEF and is aimed at helping students understand global citizenship, including their rights and responsibilities at the international level.
According to sources, the subject is likely to be introduced for students from Grade 4 to Grade 8. The Punjab Examination Commission has already started consultations with UNICEF regarding its inclusion in the school syllabus, marking an early stage in what officials describe as a structured curriculum development process.
The Global Citizenship subject will focus on developing students’ understanding of the wider world and encouraging them to become responsible members of society. It will also help students understand their role and responsibilities beyond the national level, extending the scope of civic education taught in Punjab’s public schools beyond its current national focus.
Sources said UNICEF may provide funding for the printing of textbooks and other learning materials required for the new subject. The Punjab Education Department said the initiative would improve students’ awareness of global issues and help them develop a better understanding of international citizenship, adding that introducing Global Citizenship in schools would prepare students to meet the evolving demands of an increasingly interconnected world.
