Apple and Google have entered a multi-year collaboration that will see Google’s Gemini artificial intelligence technology powering Apple’s next generation of AI capabilities, including enhancements to the Siri digital assistant. This partnership marks a departure for Apple, a company traditionally known for developing its core technologies independently. After a thorough evaluation, Apple determined that Google’s AI platform offers the most capable foundation for advancing its AI ambitions across devices like the iPhone.

This agreement represents an uncommon collaboration between two major rivals in the smartphone industry. Apple’s iOS and Google’s Android operating systems continue to dominate the global market, but the companies have maintained a lucrative partnership for years. Google pays Apple billions annually to remain the default search engine on Apple’s devices, a deal that has faced scrutiny from regulators including the US Justice Department. Despite legal challenges, the arrangement remains intact. Details about the financial terms of this AI partnership have not been publicly disclosed.

Industry experts have welcomed the partnership as a significant endorsement of Google’s AI strength and a crucial step for Apple to accelerate its AI strategy into 2026. Prior to finalizing the deal, Apple reportedly considered partnerships with other AI developers such as OpenAI, Anthropic, and Perplexity. The company has encountered delays and leadership changes in its AI division, including postponing the launch of an improved Siri assistant last year. The new Siri features powered by Google’s Gemini technology are expected later this year, enhancing user experience with more advanced AI capabilities.

While adopting Google’s AI technology for its cloud-based features, Apple emphasized that its proprietary AI system, Apple Intelligence, will continue to operate locally on devices such as iPhones and iPads. This ensures user data remains protected with Apple’s industry-leading privacy standards. Meanwhile, Google and other tech giants including Microsoft and OpenAI continue to push the boundaries of AI with increasingly sophisticated models. Apple’s decision to combine its privacy-focused approach with Google’s AI expertise highlights its strategic balance between innovation and user security as it moves forward in the AI landscape.
