The Wireless & Internet Service Providers Association of Pakistan (WISPAP) has raised concerns regarding the current licensing framework for Class Value Added Services Voice & Data (CVAS).
In a statement, the WISPAP chairman acknowledged ongoing discussions on the issue and expressed support for key points raised by another network association. A central concern is the mandatory collaboration between CVAS operators and access providers mandated by the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA). WISPAP argues this structure empowers entities with a potential for malpractice, jeopardizing industry integrity.
The association further highlighted potential complications arising from the licensing process for cable operators already regulated by the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA). Integrating such operators with a history of unethical conduct could destabilize the market.
WISPAP proposes a standardized approach for CVAS operators. They urge the PTA to modernize the licensing framework to better reflect current market demands. This includes removing unnecessary voice communication obligations and reducing licensing fees. By streamlining the process and allowing efficient upgrades to the Local Loop (LL) standard, CVAS operators can better serve consumer needs.
The association emphasizes its commitment to fostering an environment that encourages innovation, healthy competition, and consumer welfare. They urge all stakeholders to work together in advocating for reforms that safeguard the future of the industry and improve service quality for Pakistani citizens.
