The federal government has approved a Rs500 million initiative to produce two historical web series on the lives and services of Muhammad Ali Jinnah and Allama Muhammad Iqbal as part of the commemorations marking their 150th birth anniversaries. The decision was taken at a high level consultative meeting chaired by Planning Minister Ahsan Iqbal, which brought together representatives from leading media houses, producers, directors and members of the creative sector to outline a roadmap for the project. Officials described the initiative as an effort to present Pakistan’s ideological foundations to both domestic and international audiences through contemporary digital storytelling formats.
Speaking at the meeting, the minister said the anniversary commemorations would extend beyond formal ceremonies and serve as an opportunity for national renewal and intellectual engagement. He stressed that purposeful storytelling remains a significant instrument for nation building, particularly at a time when younger generations are increasingly consuming content through digital platforms. According to the minister, the constitutional struggle led by Jinnah and the intellectual vision articulated by Iqbal would be woven into narratives designed to resonate with global audiences, helping familiarise the world with Pakistan’s ideological heritage and intellectual contributions. He noted that historical dramas can function as an effective tool of soft power and cultural diplomacy, strengthening the country’s image internationally.
Under the approved framework, the government will provide up to Rs500 million in seed funding for the two productions. In addition to financial support, workshops for writers and producers will be organised to ensure historical accuracy, authenticity and intellectual rigour in the scripts and production process. The emphasis, officials said, will be on research based storytelling that aligns with international production standards while adapting to the evolving demands of digital media consumption. The meeting also examined mechanisms to facilitate effective representation of Pakistani historical content in global markets, including discussions on the potential development of domestic over the top platforms to showcase the series and distribute them more widely.
The minister reiterated that the ideas and vision of the country’s founding figures would be presented in a manner that is both inspiring and accessible to younger audiences through drama and digital platforms. He expressed the government’s commitment to ensuring that the anniversary celebrations act as a catalyst for intellectual engagement and renewed reflection on the country’s founding principles. By investing in long form digital content centred on national history, the government aims to position Pakistan’s ideological narrative within a global cultural context while supporting the growth of the domestic creative industry.
