Pakistan is set to take a significant step toward next-generation digital connectivity with the government’s announcement of its upcoming 5G spectrum policy. The move aims to strengthen the country’s telecommunications ecosystem, enhance broadband coverage, and accelerate the adoption of emerging digital technologies. Addressing the 26th meeting of the South Asia Telecommunication Regulators Council in Islamabad, Minister for Information Technology Shaza Fatima confirmed that over 600 MHz of spectrum will be auctioned soon. This allocation will not only strengthen existing 3G and 4G networks but will also pave the way for the introduction of 5G services across Pakistan.

According to Shaza Fatima, this development aligns with the government’s broader strategy to promote digital inclusion and ensure access to affordable, high-speed connectivity for all citizens. The minister also announced the approval of a telecom infrastructure sharing framework, designed to optimize resources and reduce network deployment costs. Additionally, satellite communication regulations have been finalized, opening the door for satellite-based internet services to be launched nationwide. This integration of terrestrial and satellite technologies is expected to improve internet accessibility, particularly in remote and underserved regions.

Shaza Fatima emphasized that the government is prioritizing affordability and accessibility under its upcoming “Smartphones for All” policy. The initiative seeks to make smartphones more affordable, enabling greater participation in Pakistan’s growing digital economy. The minister highlighted that Pakistan’s digital transformation is already showing strong momentum, with over 200 million mobile subscribers and 150 million broadband users. She added that data traffic in the country has surged by 70% over the past five years, reflecting increased adoption of digital services and online platforms.

The telecom sector continues to play a pivotal role in Pakistan’s economic growth, posting a 17% year-on-year revenue increase. Shaza Fatima also noted that Pakistan’s e-commerce market has reached a value of 7.7 billion dollars and is projected to exceed 10 billion dollars next year. These figures underscore the expanding influence of digital platforms and mobile connectivity in reshaping consumer behavior and trade dynamics.

With the upcoming 5G spectrum auction, Pakistan is preparing to enter a new era of connectivity that will enable faster communication, support digital innovation, and enhance the quality of telecom services across industries. The government’s commitment to inclusive digital growth, backed by policy reforms and infrastructure development, signals continued progress toward a more connected and digitally empowered Pakistan.
