FBR’s Tax Net Expansion Plan: More Taxpayers, Less SIM Card Drama

In a bid to bring more people under the tax umbrella, the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) is taking some unconventional steps, blending seriousness with a touch of humor. The FBR is on a mission to add 1.5 to 2 million new taxpayers to the system by June 2024, turning tax season into a nationwide blockbuster.

Picture this: The FBR has strategically scattered 145 district tax offices like puzzle pieces across the country. It’s like a tax treasure hunt – find your nearest office, and voila, you’re on your way to becoming a bona fide taxpayer.

Now, here comes the plot twist – the FBR is playing detective with third-party data sources. It’s not just your tax history; they might know if you prefer tea over coffee. This intel will help identify non-filers. And here’s where it gets spicy – non-compliance could lead to a blockbuster moment where electricity and gas meters go on strike, giving your appliances a vacation.

But wait, there’s more! The FBR isn’t stopping there. They’ve got a surprise for those who think tax obligations are just suggestions. Mobile SIM cards could be playing hide-and-seek too. Block that SIM if you forget to file your taxes – a modern-day twist to tax compliance.

FBR is rallying various institutions to join the tax party. They’re asking for data through an automatic transmission system – because why make things complicated when you can make them automatic?

The FBR has set an ambitious goal – they want the tax-to-GDP ratio to skyrocket. With around 2.2 million taxpayers, they’re aiming for the stars, or at least a few more filers. It’s like trying to fill a swimming pool with a garden hose, but they’re up for the challenge.

FBR has graciously extended the deadline for filing tax returns to December 31.
