Samsung has announced the successful completion of a key technology test expected to support the development of future 6G networks. The company conducted the trial in partnership with KT Corporation, focusing on advanced wireless transmission capabilities in the 7GHz spectrum. During the test, the companies achieved a peak download speed of 3Gbps using an ultra high density antenna system, marking another step in ongoing efforts to shape next generation mobile infrastructure.
The trial centered on eXtreme multiple input multiple output, known as X MIMO, technology operating in the 7GHz band. This frequency range is being considered a leading candidate for 6G deployment because it provides a practical balance between network capacity and coverage. It remains within the millimeter wave spectrum while offering improved propagation characteristics compared to higher frequency bands. By utilizing X MIMO, Samsung integrated four times the number of antennas into the system compared to earlier designs without increasing the overall size of the equipment. The hardware maintained physical dimensions similar to previous generation units, highlighting advancements in antenna density and system engineering without expanding the device footprint.
During the test, researchers transmitted eight simultaneous data streams from a base station to a user device under simulated real world outdoor network conditions. KT Corporation contributed its expertise in recreating realistic field environments to ensure that the evaluation reflected practical deployment scenarios. The companies recorded a peak download speed of 3Gbps, demonstrating the system’s ability to handle high data throughput in the 7GHz band. X MIMO technology enhances signal processing and spatial multiplexing by enabling multiple antennas to send and receive parallel data streams, which increases spectral efficiency and network performance. Such capabilities are expected to be central in meeting anticipated data demand driven by emerging applications including immersive media, connected devices, and advanced enterprise services.
Samsung, which has been actively engaged in telecommunications equipment research and development, has identified X MIMO as a foundational component for future 6G networks. The company has been expanding its research across various candidate frequency bands and network architectures to prepare for evolving global standards. The 7GHz band in particular is gaining attention within the industry because it bridges the gap between mid band and higher millimeter wave frequencies, offering broader coverage than extremely high bands while still supporting significant data capacity. Although 6G development remains in its early stages globally, the latest joint test with KT signals continued progress in validating enabling technologies that could form part of future mobile communication frameworks.
