Microsoft has announced the Xbox Nano Controller, a smaller gamepad that measures just over 5 inches in length and weighs 3.5 ounces, and that is designed primarily for use on the go. It has a rechargeable battery and a programmable Action Button that gives quick access to screenshots, gameplay recording and the most used shortcuts of the player. The controller connects through Xbox Wireless and Bluetooth, which allows pairing with multiple compatible devices, including Xbox consoles, Windows PCs, iOS and Android devices and select smart televisions. The compact size and the wireless options show that the controller is aimed at players who want a gamepad that is easy to carry and that works with several types of device.
Microsoft is also partnering with Samsung on a limited time promotion in the United States during the holiday period. Customers who purchase eligible Samsung televisions will receive an exclusive Xbox Nano Controller and two months of complimentary Game Pass Ultimate, which can be redeemed by new Game Pass subscribers. The Xbox app, which is integrated into the Gaming Hub of Samsung, lets players stream hundreds of Xbox Game Pass games directly to their television in participating regions by pairing the controller. In addition, Microsoft is working on a deal with Meta for a similar holiday promotion in the United States, which would bundle an Xbox Nano Controller with a two month Game Pass Ultimate membership, again for new subscribers only, with the purchase of a Meta Quest device.
The controller can be pre-ordered now at a price of $49.99, ahead of the planned launch in November. Pre-orders are open in 36 markets, which include the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, Brazil, Mexico, Japan, Korea, China, Germany, France, Italy and Spain, along with several others across Europe, Latin America and Asia. The list also covers countries such as Argentina, Colombia, Peru, Poland, Hungary, Czechia, Norway, Denmark, Finland and New Zealand, so buyers in many regions will be able to reserve the controller before it reaches the market.
The price of the Nano creates an unusual situation when it is compared with the regular Xbox Wireless Controller that comes with the Xbox Series S and X consoles. That full size controller is officially priced at $65, but it is currently discounted by 25 percent on the Xbox Store, which makes it temporarily cheaper than the smaller Nano. Buyers who care mainly about price may therefore find the full size pad a better value for now, while those who want a lighter controller with a programmable Action Button for use on the go can pre-order the Nano ahead of its November launch.
