Google has introduced a new opt in feature for its Gemini assistant called Personal Intelligence, aimed at delivering more personalized and context aware responses by drawing on a user’s existing data across multiple Google services. The feature allows Gemini to connect with information already available within a user’s Google ecosystem, including Gmail, YouTube, Google Search, and Google Photos, once explicit permission is granted. According to Google, this integration is designed to help the AI assistant respond more accurately to individual queries by understanding a user’s preferences, activity history, and personal content, while maintaining user control over data access.
Once Personal Intelligence is enabled, users can manage how Gemini interacts with their data through the Gemini app or website by navigating to Settings and selecting Personal Intelligence. From there, users can choose which Google apps Gemini is allowed to access and can modify these permissions at any time. The feature allows Gemini to retrieve specific details from personal content such as emails, photos, and videos to answer direct questions or assist with tasks. For example, Gemini may help locate information from past emails, recall details from stored photos, or reference viewing history on YouTube, enabling responses that are closely aligned with an individual’s usage patterns. Google stated that this approach eliminates the need for users to manually upload sensitive information to third party platforms, as the data already resides securely within Google’s systems.
Google emphasized that privacy and transparency are central to the design of Personal Intelligence. Users have the option to start temporary chats with Gemini, which allow conversations to take place without drawing on personalized data. This ensures flexibility for those who may want to interact with the assistant without referencing their personal information. The company also noted that Gemini is designed to avoid making proactive assumptions about sensitive topics such as health related information or other personal matters. However, if a user explicitly asks about such topics, Gemini will respond accordingly. These controls are intended to give users confidence that personalization is applied only when desired and within clearly defined boundaries.
In terms of training and data usage, Google clarified that Gemini will not be trained directly on personal data sourced from Gmail inboxes or Google Photos libraries. Instead, the company stated that model improvement relies on limited information, such as user prompts entered into Gemini and the assistant’s responses, to refine performance over time. This distinction is aimed at addressing concerns around the use of private content for AI training purposes. Google explained that the purpose of Personal Intelligence is to enhance real time assistance rather than to expand training datasets using personal user information.
Personal Intelligence is being rolled out gradually over the coming week to eligible Google AI Pro and AI Ultra subscribers. The feature is available across web platforms as well as Android and iOS devices, ensuring consistent access regardless of how users interact with Gemini. With this update, Google continues to expand the capabilities of its AI assistant by integrating it more deeply into everyday digital activities, while offering users greater control over how their data is used to personalize the experience.
