A growing concern has emerged in Pakistan’s e-commerce industry, as reports surface of cash-on-delivery (COD) fraud involving courier riders altering billing amounts on parcels. Several businesses and customers have come forward, sharing instances where the original price of a package was changed, leading to customers being overcharged at the time of delivery. In a recent case, a parcel that was originally billed at Rs. 2,147 was tampered with and altered to Rs. 2,497, forcing the customer to pay an additional Rs. 350. Such fraudulent activities not only erode consumer trust but also create significant challenges for online businesses that rely on COD as their primary payment method.

As the e-commerce sector continues to expand, COD remains a preferred payment option for many customers who are hesitant to use online transactions. However, this reliance has also led to increasing instances of fraudulent practices. Complaints regarding overcharging, fake parcel deliveries, and tampering with invoices have been rising, with customers expressing frustration over the lack of accountability from courier service providers. To address this issue, businesses and consumer rights advocates are urging customers to take precautionary measures. Shoppers are advised to thoroughly check invoices before making payments, verify the package contents before accepting deliveries, and report any discrepancies immediately to both the e-commerce store and the courier company. Some businesses have already taken action by implementing stricter tracking mechanisms and warning customers to stay vigilant.

E-commerce platforms are also stepping up efforts to combat COD fraud by working closely with logistics partners to improve transparency and ensure ethical practices. While some courier companies have started introducing digital receipts and real-time tracking systems to minimize human intervention in cash transactions, industry experts stress that greater regulatory oversight and consumer awareness are essential to curbing fraudulent activities. As this issue gains attention, consumers are encouraged to report their experiences and support businesses that are actively working against COD fraud. Authorities and industry leaders will need to take stronger action to restore confidence in the COD system, ensuring that customers can continue to shop safely without fear of financial exploitation.
