Apple has released the first developer beta of iOS 27 following its WWDC 2026 keynote, delivering on months of speculation about the next major iPhone software update. The release marks the beginning of a testing cycle that will run through a public beta expected in July and a final stable release anticipated in September, following the pattern Apple has maintained across previous iOS generations. The update is shaping up to be one of the more substantive iOS releases in recent years, with a strong emphasis on Apple Intelligence integration across core applications and system-level improvements that touch everything from the keyboard to the camera.

Twelve features have been identified across the developer beta and pre-release reporting. A dedicated Siri application may enable full conversational interaction in a format comparable to ChatGPT-style assistants, moving Siri beyond its traditional role as a voice-activated command interface into a persistent chat-based assistant. A new Search or Ask interface, accessible by swiping down on the Dynamic Island, is expected to combine traditional search with artificial intelligence queries in a single entry point. In Apple Wallet, users may be able to create custom digital passes for items such as gym memberships and event access cards, alongside an Apple Cash bill-splitting feature that lets users scan receipts, assign items to individuals, and request payments directly through Wallet or Messages. The Photos application is set to gain new Apple Intelligence tools called Extend and Reframe for smarter image editing and composition adjustment, while generated subtitles for personal videos will improve accessibility for users with hearing difficulties.

On the navigation side, Apple Maps is expected to gain satellite-based functionality to support routing in areas with limited or no cellular connectivity, a meaningful upgrade for users in remote locations. Visual Intelligence is being expanded with a new Siri-powered camera mode capable of scanning nutrition labels and contact information directly, removing the need to switch between applications for information capture. Apple Intelligence is also coming to Shortcuts, allowing users to create automations through natural language prompts rather than requiring knowledge of the existing Shortcuts interface. Custom wallpapers generated by Apple Intelligence based on user descriptions round out the personal expression features, while battery life enhancements, improved autocorrect, and broader system stability improvements are also listed among the expected changes in what some observers are comparing to the focused refinement approach of Mac OS X Snow Leopard.

The iOS 27 developer beta is available to registered Apple Developer account holders without the $99 annual membership fee, with the update appearing in Software Update settings after device restart. Apple strongly recommends backing up devices before installing any beta version given the early-stage nature of the software. The public beta programme, open to all users through beta.apple.com, is expected to follow in July 2026.
