Google has confirmed that Google Assistant will be removed from Android devices on September 4, 2026, ending nearly a decade of support as the company completes its transition to Gemini, its artificial intelligence powered assistant. According to a report by 9to5Google, the company has begun notifying some users by email that Google Assistant will no longer be available on Android phones, tablets, and Wear OS smartwatches once the deadline passes, giving affected users a specific date to prepare for rather than an open-ended transition window.
Users will instead be directed to Gemini, which has already become Google’s default AI assistant across supported Android devices in the months leading up to the retirement date. Google Assistant was originally introduced in 2016 as part of the company’s Allo messaging app before expanding into Android smartphones, smart speakers, smart displays, televisions, cars, and a wide range of other connected devices, eventually becoming one of Android’s most widely used features. Over the years it allowed users to make calls, send messages, set alarms and reminders, control smart home devices, navigate with Google Maps, play music, search the web, and perform numerous other voice controlled tasks simply by saying “Hey Google.”
Google had originally planned to retire Assistant in 2025 but delayed the move while it continued expanding Gemini’s capabilities to ensure feature parity before fully switching users over. In recent months, the company has accelerated the rollout of Gemini as the default assistant on compatible Android devices, a pattern consistent with the broader deprecation timeline that has already seen several older Assistant features quietly phased out ahead of the final cutoff.
Unlike Google Assistant, which relied on more rules based voice command processing, Gemini is built on Google’s generative AI technology and supports voice, text, and image based interactions. It can handle the same everyday phone functions Assistant previously managed while also offering more advanced AI capabilities, including content generation, summarization, and contextual, multi-turn conversations that go well beyond simple command and response interactions. Users who are still relying on Google Assistant will need to switch over to Gemini after September 4, since Assistant will no longer be supported on Android devices from that date onward, marking the effective end of one of the platform’s longest running and most recognizable features.
