CodeGirls, a pioneering initiative dedicated to empowering women in technology, has made significant strides in bridging the gender gap in Pakistan’s digital economy. Since its inception in 2018, the program has trained over 1,400 women, achieving an 84.4% retention rate and a remarkable 70% job placement rate. The initiative, led by ConsulNet Corporation in collaboration with United Global Initiative and WomenInTechPK, aims to equip women with essential coding, business, and technology skills, ensuring their financial independence and inclusion in the global workforce.

The recently released CG 2024 Impact Report highlights the program’s success in transforming the lives of its graduates, who have gone on to secure positions in tech firms, educational institutions, and even launch their own startups. With strategic partnerships spanning over 110 organizations, CodeGirls has created a strong link between academia, industry, and employment, serving as a blueprint for other digital upskilling programs such as the Pakistan Software Export Board’s (PSEB) Techlift initiative.

One of the major breakthroughs this year has been the launch of a Sponsored Internship Program, designed to provide hands-on industry experience to graduates. Under this initiative, 45 graduates will be placed in tech companies for three-month internships, helping them transition seamlessly into full-time employment. Additionally, the Mentorship Program, introduced in May 2024, has connected graduates with experienced professionals who offer career guidance and industry insights. This structured 10-week initiative has already played a pivotal role in improving participants’ employability and professional growth.

The report further underscores the economic impact of the program, revealing an 18x return on investment (ROI) per participant. On average, graduates now earn upwards of $170 per month, a significant jump from their previous financial status. Moreover, 79.73% of those employed after completing the program reported that they were unemployed before joining CodeGirls, highlighting the initiative’s effectiveness in creating new career pathways.

Beyond job placements, CodeGirls continues to push for greater inclusivity in tech by fostering an environment where women not only enter the field but excel in leadership roles. The initiative’s impact has also been recognized nationally, as it was awarded the National ICT Award in the CSR category in 2023. The program has become a beacon of change, proving that when women are provided with the right skills and opportunities, they can drive economic growth and technological innovation.

As the program moves forward, its focus remains on expanding outreach, strengthening partnerships, and enhancing curriculum offerings to meet evolving industry demands. With the support of sponsors such as the Jaffer Family Foundation, Hemani, and the Teizoon Family Trust, CodeGirls is set to scale its impact even further. By continuing to advocate for gender equity and providing quality training, the initiative is shaping a future where women in Pakistan are not just participants in the tech industry but leaders and innovators.
