WhatsApp Rolls Out Strict Account Settings For Enhanced Security

WhatsApp has begun rolling out a new security feature called Strict Account Settings, aimed at providing users with a lockdown-style protection system to guard against advanced threats and unwanted contact. The feature is designed to give users maximum control over who can interact with them, while limiting potential vectors for malicious content and attacks. Strict Account Settings can be activated via Settings → Privacy → Advanced once it appears on the app and is optional, allowing users to enhance security beyond default levels without affecting basic functionality.

When enabled, the feature applies a series of restrictions that automatically block media and attachments from contacts not in a user’s address book, silence calls from unknown numbers, and disable link previews. This approach narrows opportunities for attackers to exploit multimedia content or social engineering techniques. Additionally, Strict Account Settings restrict visibility of sensitive profile information such as profile photo, “last seen,” and About details to contacts only, while enforcing two-step verification and secure handling of group invites. The settings are modeled after other platform-level protections such as Apple’s Lockdown Mode and Google’s Advanced Protection Program, which limit external inputs and code execution paths to reduce risks from sophisticated malware or spyware.

Meta has emphasized that WhatsApp maintains end-to-end encryption for all calls and messages, but the new lockdown-style protections are intended for users who face higher risk from targeted attacks. Security specialists note that restricting interaction with unknown contacts and limiting incoming content can significantly reduce vectors for phishing attempts, malware distribution, and unauthorized access. While some normal interactions may be limited for users with the feature enabled, defenders argue the trade-off favors safety, particularly for journalists, public figures, and other users at risk from advanced threats.

WhatsApp has a history of addressing security issues proactively, including reporting critical vulnerabilities even without evidence of active exploitation. Strict Account Settings continues this focus by providing an additional layer of defense in response to evolving threat trends. The feature is being gradually rolled out globally through app updates, and Meta plans to refine it based on user feedback to ensure both usability and protection. With these improvements, WhatsApp aims to reinforce its commitment to safeguarding private communications in an environment of increasingly sophisticated digital threats.
