Google has started rolling out Google Pics, a new AI powered service for generating images and making precise edits to existing ones. Despite the similar name, Google Pics is separate from Google Photos and Google Images, functioning instead as a dedicated creative tool positioned to compete with established design platforms like Canva. Google describes Pics as a suite of fine-tuned editing tools designed to let users generate images and make targeted changes instead of always creating something from scratch.
Google Pics uses the company’s Nano Banana image technology, officially known as Gemini 2.5 Flash Image, though Google has not specified which version of the model powers the new service. Nano Banana has already established itself as one of the more advanced AI image editing tools available, known for preserving faces, styles and object consistency across multiple edits while allowing users to make precise, natural language driven changes without traditional design software skills.
Pics will work both as a standalone product and as part of Google Workspace, with the company saying the integration will let users edit images directly inside the apps where they are already working instead of moving content between different tools. The rollout begins with Google Docs and Google Slides starting today, with support for Google Drive expected to follow in the coming weeks. Google says the broader Pics rollout will happen gradually over the next several weeks, meaning the service may not immediately appear for all eligible users.
For now, Google Pics is restricted to Google AI Pro and Google AI Ultra subscribers, and is also available to most Google Workspace business customers, with no broader availability announced yet for free users. By embedding Nano Banana’s editing capabilities directly into Workspace apps, Google is positioning Pics as a more integrated alternative to standalone design tools, potentially reducing the need for users to switch between separate platforms for content creation and image editing within their existing workflows.
